What’s with all of the ads on my sites?

I am sure you have noticed an increase in the number of advertisements on my websites www.thebodyworker.com, www.massagepracticebuilder.com and www.massagetherapycareers.com.

This is the way that all of this information and 8 years of writing can be online here for Free for all to view and use. The advertisements are pay per click programs that pays me when someone clicks on the ads.

You can do this too on your site and make additional income with the ads. I don’t recommend putting them on pages that you are trying to get people to call you and make an appointment for a massage. The ads take the visitors away from your site. But on the other hand they may be going already so you may as well make some money from them leaving.

The latest ads I am testing are Kontera contextual ads. They seem to be working to supplement my income nicely.

I have been thinking about creating a members only section where people could pay a small monthly or yearly fee and get access to all of this info without the ads.

Anyone getting sick of all the ads? If so would you be willing to pay for all of this information that I have made available for free since 1999?

Massage Therapy National Certification

One of the major misconceptions about massage licensing is that people think that the National Certification Exam will allow them to practice in any state that they want.  There is also confusion over what you are actually being certified for.

Certification in massage is not necessarily what you need to be a successful and competent massage therapist nor is it the same as licensing.

The NCE is a test that is given by The National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and many states require that you take the test in order to get your massage therapy license.   The states may also require that you take a different number of hours of education than the NCE requires.  You have to check each states licensing requirements and fullfill those requirements.

I am also looking into the facts regarding this as the NCBTMB also requires that you recertify every so often but it is not necessary to do that to maintain you license.  Many often find the certification a waste of money and they do not renew their certification.  I for one have never been asked in 18 years of practice if I was certified and I was only challenged on my license once and that was recently by a woman who appeared to be “off her meds”.

I have some personal biases against national certification mainly from the process of it’s creation that I witnessed early in my career.

There is a new agency being formed called the Federation of Massage Therapy Boards is in the process of anaylzing a survey they did on the profession and some of the early results show that most want some form of licensing but they don’t want different levels of certification or licensing.

I think people think we need to be licensed because they are buying into the fear being created by the NCE and different states.  While most may think that it is necessary, there is no proof that it is necessary.  Most are reacting thinking that it will mean that just anyone can go and hang out a shingle and practice massage.  I see this more from people who have had advanced training and while I am not sure if it is due to their wanting to protect their status and legitimize having spent so much money for all of the continuing education or if it is truly something that is needed.

Even in licensed states there are people who are trying to practice without a license and they are being reported and prosecuted.  Does that really mean that they are not qualified to do massage?  Did they learn on their own?  Who would just go and do massage on a whim without any experience or training -even if it was just from a book or video?  I guess they are out there, but I would also guess if they weren’t any good that they wouldn’t be able to build or stay in business.

I don’t know where I am going  with this but am just rambling…Where is the licensing and legislation debate going to lead the profession?  What is happening to the art of massage?  If massage has been around for the hundreds and even thousands of years that the history shows- why now do we need licensing all of a sudden?

Massage School Surveys

I am in the process of making an online survey for massage schools to fill out and provide information about their school for readers.

What do you want to know about becoming a massage therapist?

What do you want to know about the massage schools you are considering?

What do you want to know about changing careers?

What are massage schools telling you when you ask them what your future will be like?

What are massage schools telling you when you just call asking for a catalog or brochure about their school? Do they give you any real information so that you can start comparing their programs to other programs?

What do they tell you about how much you will/can make as a massage therapist?

I will also be making the largest online school directory that allows you to review your school and the results will be posted for others to see! I will have to be careful and rule out any spammers or irate posters or even raving posters by asking for an email address.

Stay tuned…

Massage Envy

Massage Envy is a massage therapy franchise that is rapidly expanding in the US.

The offer extremely inexpensive massage sessions and work like a gym membership. You get your first massage for a reduced rate and then pay a monthly fee to get one massage a month and you also get massages for your friends or family at a reduced rate.

They hire massage therapists who are usually right out of school and lacking in experience and pay them about $15.00 per hour with some additional incentives. They really only want new massage therapists.

The fact that they are charging ridiculously low rates sets some massage therapists into a panic thinking that massage envy will effect their business. For the most part it isn’t hurting anything yet.

A recent news announcement from Massage Magazine where they interviewed the creator of this franchise said that only about 25% of the people who come in for their one free massage actually sign up. This either means that the person was only looking for a cheap massage for whatever reason which could be many or the therapists there are lacking in skills to convert this person into a membership. The fact that people are possibly being introduced to massage at a low rate is good for the profession in some ways. These people may be unsatisfied and will either seek out a skilled therapist to meet their needs or on the other hand they may think that massage didn’t do anything for them and they won’t ever go again. Either way the thing is not to panic and think that massage envy is your competitor.

The thing is to remain focused on what you are doing and let others do what they are doing. Since everyone is creating their own experiences with their thoughts and beliefs the only thing you can really do is keep focusing on what you desire.

Massage Envy (and where the heck did they get that name from – who envy’s massage? It only makes me think of another phrase that begins with a p_ n_s envy.) is nothing to envy if you are clear about what you are doing.

Massage Envy is also a great place to start and learn the ropes or to fill in with income while you build your practice or find another job that pays what a massage therapist should be getting paid – which is something more like $30-45 per hour in my opinion. After paying $12,000 -$30,000 for school, you better create great paying jobs!

Focusing on the solution

Part of being a great massage therapist is your ability to focus on the solutions when working with clients. One of the ways to do this is to be a great listener.

If you focus on the problem – the back pain, the stress what you will be promoting is more pain and stress. That seems very basic.

When it comes to promoting your practice, consider doing the same. The problem is that you are lacking in clients or enough money to do the marketing you need to do to get the clients. Worrying about this puts you on the vicious circle – no clients, no money, no marketing, no clients, no money, no marketing…well you get the idea.

What is the solution? Start wondering about how you can find clients that you need? Start wondering about how you can make the money that you need to take care of yourself and your family. Start wondering about what marketing you can do right now- this minute.

Can you call a friend who was always saying they wanted a massage? Can you ask your family and friends to come in for a massage? Are you willing to work for free and put your all into doing each massage to see where it will take you? You say you want to be doing massage but when you start thinking you only want to do massage to make money, it sets you up to start worrying about the money rather than focusing on what you do best – massage.

I was reading a marketing book once (I can’t remember which book) but the idea was to offer Free massages for a month or whatever it takes until you get the cash clients. This involves really having passion for wanting to do massage. It is the passion that will sustain you. Right now you might be thinking about what you will be eating and how you will be paying the bills. Part of the law of attraction states that you need to trust that you are doing the right thing.

It also goes back to the story of the guy in the movie “The Pursuit of Happyness”. Would you give up everything you know and love in order to get what you desire? Do you feel the same way about massage as this guy did about becoming a stock broker. (If you haven’t seen the movie the idea is that what are you willing to do to make your dreams come true? How much passion do you have for doing massage? Is it enough to sustain you through hardships and making tough choices.)

So back to focusing on the solution. What is the solution for getting the clients that you need? It starts with knowing exactly what you want. Every last detail of your practice. Start with visualizing what you want. Then notice what feelings are coming up. When you think of all of these ideas and things does it make your heart sing? or are you feeling overwhelmed and saying yeah but I don’t have any time to do this or I don’t have any money to make this happen. While it may be true that you are lacking in funds, there are ways of getting the money you need and there are ways of doing things that don’t require much money. If your thoughts are on the ‘yeah, buts’ you aren’t clear on what you want to be doing.

Getting clear is a matter of clearing up those ‘yeah, buts’. Where is that little voice coming from? Who was it that taught you that you weren’t good enough or smart enough to do the things you want to do? What belief do you have about yourself that is telling you you aren’t good enough or that you have to do things to please others rather than yourself? (I guess I also just jumped into another category – the I want to take care of others so they won’t leave belief.)

Uncovering the beliefs underneath your thinking requires that you become aware of what it is that you are thinking. To do that all you need to do is start being aware of your feelings. Your feelings are what will tell you what you are thinking. If you are feeling anything but joy, love and happiness, you are operating on your false beliefs that you created at an early age to survive. The good news is that you can change what you are thinking to change the way you are feeling.

Studying and learning to apply the law of attraction is nothing more than the process of awakening your consciousness- becoming more aware of your thoughts, feelings and beliefs and learning to make different choices about what you are thinking and feeling and changing your beliefs. You can start learning more about this at my site www.learn-the-law-of-attraction-secret.com (which is really just starting out and no where complete, but you can start reading some of the free ebooks that are online on this topic and start creating the practice of your dreams and desires.
