Keeping the passion for massage while building a massage business can be a very challenging thing. Many massage therapists come into the profession with many dreams of helping others and having a more rewarding career but forget that it is also about building a business or being successful at their jobs.
How do you keep the passion when you don’t have enough clients to pay the bills and are faced with the many duties of insurance billing, bookkeeping, marketing, creating your website and all of the other duties that can be so draining? How can you keep the passion when working on draining clients who are late or want discounts all the time or don’t respect your time and work?
All of the business part that goes along with being a massage therapist is often what massage therapist find to be difficult. You just want to do the massage. That is what you thought you were getting into this all for.
Taking care of yourself before all else is the first step. Do you need to take a job or find another way to make money until you get the clients that you need or to be able to only take “Your Ideal Client” rather than clients who feel draining to you? Do you get regular massage yourself so that you can always be in touch with your body and also what touch and massage are about? Getting regular massage is one of the best ways to keep in touch with how important being a massage therapist is. It will help you keep your perspective and keep you focused on why you got into this work in the first place.
There are also other things you can do like create your own peer supervision group, get individual supervision, go to massage conventions, read books on anything related to massage and business, keep learning, take classes and of course most importantly practice self care.
Self care is everything from just getting good sleep and eating right to getting weekly massage, taking vacations, getting alone time, getting time with friends and family – doing whatever it takes to feed your soul. The more you do that the less you will find that any clients are draining to work with. The stronger you become in yourself and the more awareness you have of yourself can help to fuel the passion you have for helping others.
Also know that being able to stay with your passion through all of the challenges is what being passionate is all about. Following your passion is always a double edged sword. One of the definitions of passion is actually suffering. Following the passion will often lead you to the things you need to learn most and will teach you more about yourself and your false beliefs about yourself.
So keeping the passion for massage is an ongoing process.
What do you to keep your passion despite all of the things that need to be done to sustain it?
