Licensing and Legislation Issues

I have been working on a new section on my www.massage-career-guides.com website that looks into the rules and regulations for massage in each state.

I have been reading the actual laws and regulations and find it amazing that there can be so much discrepancy in how massage is defined and what is included and what exactly is the scope of practice of a massage therapist.

I am asking for your help in building this section. If you know the details of what is required in your state or any other information about what it is like to practice in your state, please contact me. I am particularly interested in information such as:

  • Is craniosacral therapy, polarity therapy, Trager, structural integration, reiki or Reflexology included in the massage licensing?
  • Are you licensed by the board of Health or under another medical professional division?
  • Are you able to bill for insurances like PPO’s and HMO’s?
  • How many massage therapists are there taking the exam each year, leaving the profession each year?
  • How many massage therapists are practicing after 1 year? 2 years? 5 years? 10 years?
  • Do you have to collect sales tax?
  • Do you have to get fingerprinted?
  • If the exam is the NCE, do you have to maintain your national certification status.
  • Are there restrictions for doing animal massage?
  • How is massage defined?
  • How many massage therapists are disciplined for inappropriate behavior each year?
  • Where can massage therapists work?
  • What else would you want someone just starting out in the profession to know about?
  • What should everyone know about licensing in your state so that we can improve upon the defining and regulating in the future?

Any and all comments, information, feedback appreciated!!
