Maryland Massage Therapy Licensing

The latest page is up on the licensing requirements for massage therapy in Maryland.

I was quite surprised to see that they are licensed by the chiropractic board and it seems that massage therapists there can’t work in a medical clinic. Does that mean they can’t do medical massage?

Actually, in Maryland there are two designations for MT’s. CMT (Certified Massage Therapist) and RMP (Registered Massage Practitioner). The difference is 60 college credit hours, any 60 college credit hours. If you have them – CMT, and if you don’t – RMP. If you are a CMT, you can practice in a medical facility, if not, you can’t. Don’t necessarily understand the randomness of it all, but that’s the way it is.
