Massage Envy – Love them or leave them

Massage Envy (ME) is always such a controversial topic among massage therapists.  When massage therapists who are self employed first hear about Massage Envy they think that their own business is doomed with a place like that offering such cheap massage.  (There will always be someone offering cheaper massage somewhere.)  Of course the massages at ME won’t be anything like that of a self employed massage therapist for the most part.

But ME is here to stay or so it seems.  From reading online they are still hiring massage therapists.  It is partly because they have a high turnover and partly because they are still busy even with a failing economy.

If you choose to work at a Massage Envy do so with pleasure.  ME has it’s place.  You can learn a lot.  You will work on a lot of people and get some great experience doing massage.  You will at least have an income and a job to go to when others are struggling.   If you work hard and know how to really do a deep tissue massage and know how to educate clients to keep them coming back and get them referring all of their friends you should do well.  Getting tips is how you will be able to make more money working at ME and also promoting their membership packages.

If you hate working at ME – then don’t.  No matter how bad the economy is, if you really hate your job you aren’t doing anyone any good.  If you hate working there  because of the low pay, long hours, back to back clients or whatever it is – you are the one who decided to work there.  You may as well enjoy it and make the best of it.  Learn what you can do to get higher tips and more clients.

Side bar:  Did you ever watch the movie “The Wrestler”? I just watched it last night and it was a great example on how to make the most of a bad job.  The Wrestler had to take a job at a deli counter and serve people their deli items.  He dreaded it every step down a long hall to the counter.  After a few hours he really got into helping people and serving them their deli items.

So you can work there and continue to complain about them and be miserable, you can change your perspective or you can just quit.  Massage Envy is what it is.  Can we just accept it and embrace them ( teach them to treat massage therapists better by working with them and providing resources like supervision to their massage therapists) and  work on finding an even better solution which is a massage franchise that pays massage therapists more and charges clients a little more to make it a better all around place to work and get a massage?
