Massage School Enrollments and Graduates Down

The recent report by AMBP on the results of their massage school enrollment survey MASSAGE SCHOOL ENROLLMENT, NUMBER OF GRADUATES, DECLINES FOR FIRST TIME IN NEARLY A DECADE

Is actually good news for the massage profession.

What I think it means is that massage schools are being challenged to provide quality education and meet the demands of the profession.  People are making more informed decisions about jumping into massage schools (maybe because of my website – www.massagetherapycareers.com  ?)

Maybe the massage schools are finally adding entrance requirments that were so badly needed to make sure people were educated and mature enough for massage school.  Many schools have been catering to accepting students who were injured in other professions such as pipe fitters or who were unemployable for various reasons.  These people get funding from the state or other agencies for career re-training.  While I am not saying that a pipe fitter could not make a good massage therapist, these people are going to massage school because they have no other choice or it may be just the best choice out of a sea of many, but they may be lacking the real passion and drive that it requires to be successful in this profession.

ABMP also in a previous report, stated that there were approximately 60,000 new therapists each year and that there were about 50,000 massage therapists who were also leaving the profession.  This fact is quite alarming.  What is it saying about the massage schools in the first place?  What is the reason for this high rate of people leaving the profession?  Is it that the schools don’t prepare people adequately for the profession?  Is it that people don’t realize just how hard it is to start a business or that if they are looking for a job, chances are the pay is really low?

I am curious to see what the next trend will be in the massage schools and in the massage profession.
