One of the best classes in my massage program was 'The Business and Marketing of Massage & Bodywork'. All semester we worked on pieces of our business plan using Cheri Sohnen-Moe's book 'Business Mastery' as our main guide. By the end of the semester we had a complete business plan. It was a great exercise for us all to have a very realistic look at our businesses before getting out of school.

Because of this, I had a list of my expenses and estimated income for the first year. I was able to open my business one week after graduating because of the work I put into my plan.

For others, it was a real look at whether or not their business ideas would make it in the real world. Many students realized that they would need to have a second job in the beginning and a few decided to work for someone else for a while.

The $60-$80 per hour rate is very seductive. Where else can you make this kind of money? But one needs to sit down and put it all on paper (or on computer) and seriously consider what the bottom line works out to be in his/her geographical area.
