The process of learning to read and understand research can be intimidating, time consuming and yes even downright boring! But just taking it little by little can go a long way. The following was recommended on the Project for Open Massage Education Website:
Somatic Research Series of articles by Ravensara Travillian. Massage and Bodywork Magazine Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. (PDF files)
Assessment questions when analyzing a research article. Ravensara Travillian. Project for Open Education in Massage (www.poem-massage.org)
Mag articles for research literacy and lovely homework Rose Chunco on www.poem-massage.org
I also recommend getting the book Making Sense of Research - Martha Menard 2nd edition. Martha Brown Menard Ph.D., C.M.T., is a massage therapist, research scientist, author and educator. Much of her clinical work over 25 years has focused on oncology massage, pain management, and massage for trauma survivors. Making Sense of Research contains an explanation of the scientific method and the research process, step-by-step directions for locating research articles, and standards for classifying and evaluating both quantitative and qualitative studies.
