Multiple streams of income for massage therapists

One of the things I keep talking about is how it is necessary (no matter what field or career you are in ) to have multiple streams of income.  Last weeks problems on Wall St is the perfect example.  No job or business is secure.

One of the ways I have been making extra money is through my websites.  All I do is write about the massage profession and put Google Ads on the pages.  The way this works is that when someone clicks on the ads I get paid.  How much?  Well enough that I can keep my practice at a reasonable 12 massages a week so I don’t have to over do it physically and emotionally.

Well this week my websites gave me quite a surprise.  One of my sites – www.massagetherapycareers.com caught the eye of an website developer and they offered to buy it from me.  I had never thought about that possibility at all.  The offer was quite worth it- enough for me to beef up my savings, pay some bills and do a few nice things like maybe a trip to HI or FL if the hurricanes settle down.  The thing is that I can just go and do it all over again.  There wasn’t any non-compete clause.  The new owners will be turning the site into a massage school directory which I was slowly headed towards but I wasn’t getting the traffic I needed for the keywords “massage schools”.   I was already on the first page of Google for the keywords “massage therapy” and “massage therapist”.   I think the problem is that the school listings were not the Tier 1 pages or first pages from the home page.   My plans are to create a few sites – one on massage schools specifically and the  other on massage careers again.   The only reason I sold it was because I know I can recreate the same thing using Site Build it! ( the all in one hosting and business development system) and hopefully in a shorter timeframe from all that I have learned from doing the first site.

The thing is that anyone can do this -take something that you love and know a lot about and turn it into a website.  It just takes a little brainstorming.  What do you like to do or talk about?  What do you know a lot about that you can write at least 50 page on or more is even better?   Take a look at the SiteBuild it! Action Guide that you can read for free and use some of the free tools to start brainstorming a topic.

I haven’t had as much time to write with all of the excitement and now new planning, but I will be getting on track hopefully by next week.  Until then there is plenty of material on www.thebodyworker.com and this blog for reading and ideas on how to start and build your massage practice.

  1. I agree with having multiple income streams! I am the owner of Biotic. Biotic provides business services to massage therapy providers. Biotic create web sites, business cards, logos, and business plans for Massage Therapy providers. Biotic’s web site http://www.BioticRochester.com also uses Google AdSense.

After 17 years at Xerox and being a senior manager, I saved my pennies so I could “retire” early at 39 years old. I will be licensed in massage therapy by Spring 2009. I left the corporate world for some rest and reflection. I found massage to be a true life calling! I thought I would drop all the corporate knowledge but found so many Massage Therapists need this help… so I setup Biotic to help them.

This is a great resource to the world community of massage therapist. Lets all raise the bar of professionalism for massage therapists everywhere!

    Be at peace,
