New Mexico Massage Licensing

My latest findings about massage therapy licensing in New Mexico are quite interesting.

It appears that they have the strictest regulations for teachers of massage therapy. They must actually have been massage therapists for 2 years and be able to prove it.

Most states I have looked at do not have any requirements for massage teachers. From what I have seen, the students become teaching assistants and teachers right out of school and it is one of the ways the schools continue to cut costs because they usually don’t pay teaching assistants very well or even at all. The teaching assistants want to do that to enhance their massage skills which is fine. It may sort of be a case of the fledgling not wanting to leave the nest.

What do you know about how well this is working in New Mexico?

Could this be something that all states should require?

How are the other teachers in states that they don’t require anything of massage teachers? I know there will always be good and bad ones.

If I was going to massage school today, I would not want to be taught by someone who has never had a full time massage practice as they wouldn’t really know what it really takes to be a successful massage therapist.
