Spa Therapies

I have been thinking about spas the other day and how they may really be the best example of “caretaking” – taking care of others at your expense.

The spa business is booming. People don’t take care of themselves…or is this how they are taking care of themselves?
Why do people go to spas? To get away? To have someone take care of them because they are too stressed out to take care of themselves?

Don’t get me wrong – I have been to a few spas….I guess I just prefer a great massage which I have never got at a spa. I also hear so many spa horror stories – “I was left with my feet soaking in tepid water that was growing cold for an hour.” ” They asked me if I wanted aromatherapy and I said no, but they tried to charge me extra for it.”

How do spa’s promote “caretaking” and hurt our professional image more than it helps us? Do people then come for massage looking for that same “caretaking”?

(If you haven’t read my sections on caretaking…it’s about my theory that we take care of others in the way we would like to be taken care of….we take care of others first before ourselves thinking that is enough to make us look good and feel good.)

I also realized that even though it is “caretaking” -people expect to be taken care of and pay for it and the people doing the therapy know that they are there to “caretake” so there isn’t the hidden agenda that there is often in a therapeutic massage setting..

    Hi Julie,

I can confirm what you said about spa’s. I had a lot of experiences with spa’s where the most impressive was how much they were able to charge for something that was worth much less.
However, specially in Thailand I had the chance to visit some outstanding retreats where I was really treated so well and got such a professional massage, that I paid the services with pleasure. In Germany, unfortunately, there is not such an deep-rooted culture of making people feel comfortable as I experienced it from specially south-east-asian nations.

    Take care and be happy,
