Starting an online business is a really popular idea especially with all of the economic challenges we are faced with. Jobs are no longer what they used to be. Everyone really needs to create multiple streams of income to support yourself and family.
Starting an online business that provides a quality service or information will also be what the economy needs – businesses run with integrity – to help get the economy rolling again.
I have created a simple outline on how to start an online business just to give you an overview. It is simple in some ways but it takes time to research and develop an online business.
- Write down about 3-5 different topics that you know a lot about and are passionate about – like hobbies, specialized knowledge from your job or career, sports, community projects – what is it that you love talking about? Don’t worry if they seem dumb to begin with or if you think you can’t make money creating a website about that.
- Start researching the topics using the free keyword search tool to see if others are searching for your possible topics.
- Look to see how many sites there are out there already by searching on Google with the word or phrase in “quotations” so you can get an idea of what your competition will be.
- By now I am sure you are getting some ideas and things are spinning around in your head. Don’t think about domain names or how you will do this. Just think about what inspires you and makes you feel most alive.
- Narrow it down to 3 topics.
- Start looking for ways to make money like promoting affiliate programs or using Google Adsense. Affiliate programs are programs that will pay you to promote their products. Look for products that are related to your topics. Here is a list of some affiliate networks.
- Learn how to create an optimized website and how to choose the best domain name by figuring out what solution do you provide.
- Work to get backlinks to your website to get traffic to your site. You can use Squidoo.com, Yahoo! Answers, article marketing, social bookmarking and many other things to get backlinks (links that just point to your website)
- Once you get about 100 visitors a day going to your site you can begin to monetize – or set up your money making promotions.
- Analyze your traffic and promotions to see what is working.
Keep working to build content (write pages) and get backlinks to your site. Before you know it you will have a steady flow of income. The more you work at it the more you can make obviously.
