How do people find you online?

When people search online for a massage therapist, what terms or keywords do you think someone would use to find you?

massage therapy?

massage therapist?

While there are many people searching for those keywords, using those words would be like searching for a needle in a haystack as far as the results the search engines would find.
What exactly is someone searching for when they put in those keywords – I really don’t know. Are they massage therapists? Are they people looking for a massage therapist? Since people for the most part don’t really know how to do effective searches it is hard to say what people are really looking for when someone searches for ‘massage therapy’.

One of the ways to get your website to the top of the search engines is using Google Adwords or Yahoo! Search Marketing which I have talked about before.
Basically what you do is pay to get your site to the top pages by bidding on the keywords with each search engine. You can set the amount you pay per click, per day and per month. You can choose what words to bid on.

If you choose Google’s Adsense program, you can also choose to advertise on specific sites like my site www.thebodyworker.com which is one of the top sites for when someone puts in the words Swedish massage at Google. I also get about 2000-2500 visitors a day searching for something related to massage.

Most people who know how to search would probably search for massage, your city I would think. To get to the top of the search engines for using those keywords you can also choose to pay for Advertisements with the search engines or pay for other methods of advertising.

Using Sitebuildit! will also help you get there as they teach you what you need to do to create pages and links to get the traffic that you will need.

To start getting a better idea of the process of finding a good massage therapist – go out and go through the process of finding one yourself. What do you do to find someone? Who would you go to once you get some names or even referrals from doctors or friends? Most people go on referrals but you have to have referral source you can trust. (I have a friend who has referred me to some people that she sees for various healthcare issues and everytime I go, I am greatly disappointed as I have different needs and value different things. I finally figured out to stop going to people she referred – we are just different.)

What are people looking for when looking for a massage therapist? Most have a problem that needs a solution. Or it may not be a problem but a need that they have that they are looking to get fulfilled. Once they find your site or office, what will make the difference in them calling you vs. someone else? They have to perceive that you and your massage is something that they need and they also have to value your service. If they have never met you how can they make a more informed decision on whether or not to choose you? You have to tell them what you value so they can figure out if their values match yours.
By paying close attention to what you value you can also make more conscious business decisions and attract clients who need your services…more on values later but you can read what I wrote a few years ago – Truth Marketing.

Websites

Are you getting sick of me talking about websites yet?

I am getting more information from my feedback form that is really quite interesting.

People seem to want a website but do not understand just what it takes to make a website that works. They also do not understand that you have to be able to pay for things to support your practice. The lifetime value of a customer will tell you more about how much you should spend to get one customer. One new client coming in one time would be whatever your hourly rate is ($75.00). How many times will they come in to see you over the year? My ideal client comes in every other week at least – 2 x a month. $75 x2 = $150 per month x 12 = $1800. Should I stop there? You can multiply that by how many number of years you plan on doing massage. I have 2 clients in particular who come 2x a week and one has been coming for about 17 years the other for about 15 years. How much is that worth to you? How much would you spend to get one client like that?

A basic 8-10 page website

My survey is showing that most people just want an 8-10 page website for their massage business. This is fine but know it is just more like a calling card and getting search engines to find it won’t be easy. And even if you do get them to find you, the chances of getting a steady flow of new clients that fit your ideal client profile (which is a necessary part of creating a massage practice that is successful and lasts) is probably not good without paying additional advertising fees. I am not saying it can’t be done, but you will most likely have to pay to get the search engines to find you.

The thing about adding content – like at least 30 pages and ideally a few hundred is that you can write about what you do and develop a relationship with your readers. You can really get clear about what you do and who you want to be doing it with. The clearer you get in the vision of your practice, the easier it will come to you. Sitebuildit! asks you the tough questions and the process of creating a website is really the process of learning to ask for what you want by sharing who you are and what you do. It is the Law of Attraction all in one. Creating a website with a few hundred pages will challenge you to really show up and be present. It will really make you think about yourself and your dreams and aspirations. It will really help you get clear and set your boundaries and decide who you want to work with. That way your business decisions will be easier. You will know who to talk to. You will know what to say. It is the process of building your self confidence through challenging yourself to write about what you do. Just think how it can change the perception of massage and educate the world.

So starting with an 8-10 page website with just the basic pages – your services, what you charge, your policies and procedures is a great place to start. If you really want results, I recommend writing more. If you are thinking that you can’t write that much – don’t worry. Sitebuildit! will basically tell you what you have to write about if you can’t think of anything. Building a website with SBI begins with doing keyword research and finding out what people are searching for. After you build a dozen or so pages and start getting traffic, SBI will keep track of what words people are using to find your site so you can learn what people are looking for. You can then build pages to attract more of those visitors or adjust your content to attract someone different if it doesn’t seem to be the type of client you want to work with.

The idea that you don’t have to or even want to work with everyone who calls or emails you may seem foreign to you because you are thinking you can’t afford to turn away clients. The best piece of advice that I ever got from an instructor was to only work on nourishing clients. I didn’t always follow that for the same reason you may be thinking – I have to pay the bills. Now I am finally really getting it and can see that it wasn’t alway the right thing to do. I now am only taking clients I want to work with. I have a full schedule and I don’t have anymore no shows or last minute cancellations. ( I was having trouble with them for awile and it seems to come and go depending on how well I am setting my boundaries.)

So what I am saying I guess it that SBI more than anything has really helped me figure out what it is that I want in a client and even with my websites.

It is so much more than just a hosting package- it is an all in one success system with it’s own Coaching system (the action guide) and support system (forums).

Webiste ideas

There are so many ideas that I have for making websites that are on
topics related to massage that you can incorporate into your massage
business site or do a completely separate site that can be a good way
to make additional income.

- A continuing education calendar for your area. You can contact all
of the schools and start contacting some of the teachers in your area
who are offering continuing education and start a service that provides
a listing of the classes. You can either put the listing on your
website and have it appear there regularly or you can just collect the
ads (with people paying for them of course) and put the information
out once a month or whatever in a newsletter. SBI already has a
newsletter function, but you can start it with a Yahoo! Group. I have
a Yahoo! group for WA state that doesn’t have many members yet or much
activity, but I have is so I can implement that idea. I also think it
is good to have local communities of massage therapists for support.

- A job opening/ office space for rent listing. Start contacting
schools and let them know you will be starting a list. I was shocked
to here from a therapist in TX who said the schools did not have a job
bank for their graduates. Most of the schools here in WA have job
banks/office space for rent listings but it is available only to their
graduates. Someone on here mentioned creating a job agency for
massage therapists which would be what this really does. You could
charge a small fee for listings or charge a small fee for a membership
for the massage therapists.

- A site that talks about a certain type of massage that you do. I
have heard from a few of you that you have developed your own
technique and have ideas for teaching it or writing a book about it.
A website is a great place to put all of this information and then put
Google ads or other ad systems on your site or you could also write an
ebook and start selling it (all automated through your website.)

- Do you know a lot about massage tables or massage tools/supplies.
What we really need is a great site that reviews all of the products
and compares them and has a place for readers to rate them. You could
do this in a membership type of site or just make money through
affiliate programs and recommending products. Or just write reviews
and use Google Ads again.

- What about the success you have had in a specific area such as
working with fibromyalgia or some other condition? What about a
special or specific population? Do you know a lot about hydrotherapy
or other modality? While there probably are a lot of sites out there
that talk about these things – most of them are junk and don’t really
give any real information.

I have so many ideas for websites – if you want any more or have an
idea that you keep playing with in your head and want to discuss or
expand on – just start talking about it here or submit my short
questionairre..

One of the common reasons for people not wanting a website is not
having the time or the money to put into it. The time doesn’t really
matter – it is a process. You do what you can when you can. When you
see how you can make money while you are at work or on vacation through
your website, I think you will start making more time to put into it.
Right now the bulk of my income comes through Google adsense (if you
don’t know how this works see -

http://www.workless-playmore.com/google-adsense-program.html)

Basically you put Google ads on your site and when people click on
them you get paid. I know it sounds too unbelievable but I was at the
bank the other day asking a question about my account and the teller
even asked me what that deposit from Google was about.

So whatever your fears about starting something, it is always good to
take a look at where they are coming from as most of the time, we are
just getting in our own way.

I know building websites isn’t for everyone.
So right now I am offering to build a 10 page website for you to start
with for $300 (and the website itself will cost $299 for a year of
hosting) and then you can decide if you want to start adding pages and
follow the complete Sitebuildit! Action Guide yourself. I can then
maintain it for you for $50 per month.

This is the last you will be seeing offering my services so cheaply as
I am becoming a Certified Sitebuildit! Webmaster and I am also going
to start teaching at a local school here. When that happens my rates
will be going up to $1500 for a website and I won’t be able to take
people who are not serious about creating something for themselves
online. As a part of that fee, I will be coaching you and helping you
to learn to talk about what it is that you do and how to connect with
potential clients starting with your website – but the whole
Sitebuildit! system and process are really the basis for building a
successful massage business or any business and I am using it as part
of my coaching program.
Actually you can just start with this ebook from Sitebuildit!
The Service Seller’s masters course -

And to top it off Sitebuildit! has extended their sale until May 8th at
midnight.

So are you sick of hearing about this already? or have I got you
really interested? or did you just delete this? :-)

The process of building a website

Yes, I have become a website addict! But you see, it isn’t really about the website. It is about the process of building one that is so exciting to me.

When I work with people to help them build a website for their massage practice, I help people take a really good look at themselves and then get a good understanding of who their client is so that they can then figure out what they want to say to someone to help them connect with that potential client.

You have to really know yourself and what it is that you do. What types of massage do you do AND why? Yes why do you do that? What do you get out of doing that type of work? What will your client get out of you doing that type of work? What does doing massage mean to you? What purpose does it serve for you to do massage? What feeling to get when you do a massage whether it is for money or not? What solution do you provide for people?

Who is your ideal client? Not just what age, occupation, location or other demographics. What problems do they have? What do they value? What are they looking for? Put yourself in your clients shoes. How would they go about finding a massage therapist that fits their needs?

When you have a good picture of who you are and what you do and why and combine it with your picture of your ideal client, you will have to talk about yourself and communicate what it is that you do to potential clients who are looking for what it is that you do.

That’s all that marketing is. Who you are + your ideal client = a successful business relationship.

The process of creating a website will take you through all of these steps in depth and will keep you focused on those things. You will have to write about 30 pages on what you do using the keywords that someone would use to find you. You will have to continue to write pages and keep adding things to your website to attract more search engines and people.

This whole process is taught in the Free Service Seller’s Masters Course from Sitebuildit!

If you so start a website for your massage practice, there are also other ways to make money from your site. One of the things that I see that is really needed is a Continuing education calendar for each major city. It could be combined with a job/office for rent listing center. This whole thing could really be done through your website and make you money on the side.
If anyone is iterested in doing something like that, please contact me and I will help you as much as I can.
If you are wanting to build a website on something else besides a massage (or any other service related business) and learn to make money with your website, it again is a process. What you have to figure out is what are you most passionate about? What do you love talking about? What are you an expert at? What lights up your life? It doesn’t have to be anything big or amazing. Do you know a lot about a certain disease or condition? Do you love hiking or birdwatching? Do you have a craft or hobby that you participate in? Do you know a lot about investing, buying houses, growing tomatoes, homeschooling, taking care of elderly, creating landscapes, interior decorating, a certain type of massage or bodywork?
What ever it is there is a website in it and it is a process of learning to uncover your passion and make it into something that makes you a second income or even a full time income or money to supplement your retirement or whatever it is that you want the money for.

There are many ways of making money online. You can see some of them on my website, but the main way that I have been making money online is with Google Adsense. All you do is set up a free account with them and they give you the code to put on your website for the ads and when ever anyone clicks on the ad- you get paid. I know it just sounds like the craziest thing you ever heard. Who clicks on ads? Well someone is and it is helping me make a decent size income so I can focus on my writing and keeping you informed and challenging you to become a successful massage therapist!
